What are RIPE meetings

Twice a year, the Internet community comes together in Europe for the RIPE (Réseaux IP Européens) meeting. For one week, attendees discuss a wide range of topics related to the Internet, including peering, routing and network security. These meetings are open to anyone with an interest in anything internet-related, and they provide a unique opportunity to learn from and engage with some of the brightest minds in the industry. Here's everything you need to know about the RIPE meetings.

What is RIPE?

RIPE is a membership-based organization that promotes cooperation and coordination among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Europe. Their predominant activity is acting as Regional Internet Registry (RIR), providing global internet resources and accompanying services—including IPv4, IPv6 and more. RIPE was founded in 1989 and has been hosting regular meetings ever since.

What happens at a RIPE Meeting?

During RIPE meetings, attendees discuss a wide range of topics related to the Internet, including peering, routing and network security. The meetings are informal and highly interactive, with plenty of opportunities for networking and collaboration. Attendees also have the opportunity to present their own work during so-called lightning talks or plenary sessions.

RIPE Meetings schedule

RIPE meetings are held twice per year, once around May and once around October/November. Both meetings try to be held in various cities within the RIPE service region. Keep an eye on the RIPE event schedule for upcoming dates.

Open Policy Discussions

One of the main reasons for attending a RIPE meeting is to participate in the open policy discussions. These provide an opportunity for attendees to have their say on internet-related issues and help shape future RIPE policies.

Presentations

Another key component of RIPE meetings are the presentations given by various experts on Internet-related topics. These presentations are usually followed by lively Q&A sessions.

Hands-On Tutorials

In addition to the policy discussions and presentations, attendees can also participate in hands-on tutorials. These are typically led by experienced trainers and offer attendees the chance to learn about topics like IPv6, DNS security and more.

Attending a RIPE Meeting

Anyone with an interest in the internet and networking can attend a RIPE meeting. If you're interested in attending, you can find more information on the RIPE website. Registration typically opens several months before each meeting takes place.

If you're interested in staying up-to-date on all things related to the internet, attending a RIPE meeting is a great way to do it. If you're thinking about attending a RIPE meeting, be sure to check out their website for more information on registration and upcoming meetups.

Other meetings by the RIPE community

Aside from the five-day RIPE meeting, RIPE NCC organizes two other types of events: RIPE regional meetings and RIPE roundtable meetings.

RIPE regional meetings

The RIPE NCC regional meetings are organized by the RIPE NCC in each RIPE NCC region at least once a year. They aim to provide RIPE NCC members, local internet communities and other interested parties with an opportunity to meet face-to-face and exchange information about RIPE NCC activities, services and developments that are relevant to the local internet community.

RIPE roundtable meetings

The RIPE roundtable meetings are usually one-day events organized by the RIPE NCC in collaboration with members of the RIPE community. They provide an opportunity for open discussion and debate on current topics relevant to the work of the RIPE community, such as IPv6 deployment, traffic engineering or measurements.

RIPE general meetings

The RIPE general meetings (GM) are held twice a year during the RIPE meeting and are the main decision-making body of the RIPE NCC. All RIPE members are invited to attend and vote at these meetings. The GMs approve the budget and approve changes to charging schemes. They also appoint members to fill any vacancies on the Executive Board or on RIPE standing committees.
